Stunning goals and incredible drama – Barca & Inter deliver match for the ages – Semi-Final Champions League 2024/2025
With fans and neutrals alike on the edge of their seats from this gripping encounter, expectations were high for an equally entertaining second half.

After three stunning goals worthy of putting any team in the Champions League final, there was almost an air of disappointment when Inter’s goal to restore their advantage came from a simple corner routine.

Dumfries rose highest to meet Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner at the back post, highlighting Barca’s defensive struggles.

“Inter are not the most dynamic team, and they don’t have much raw pace but there was still a way for them to hurt Barca, on the break or with set-pieces,” said Warnock.

“They are the oldest squad in the Champions League so there is a lot of experience there and they showed that tonight with the way they were clever enough to keep opening Barca up.”

At 30 years and 56 days, Inter named the seventh oldest starting XI for a Champions League semi-final game and they used all of that experience to keep cool heads in a high-drama scenario.

Why Arsenal can still reach Champions League final – 2024/2025
Many supporters reacted as though the tie was dead and buried after the Gunners were beaten at home by Paris St-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

But, as Merino went on to explain, there are signs that the tie remains in the balance.

Manager Mikel Arteta was quick to make clear in his post-match news conference that it is only “half-time” before the second leg in Paris next Wednesday.

Arsenal could turn the tie around and reach their first Champions League final since 2006.

The word used the most by Real players and supporters this week was ‘la remontada’ which means ‘the comeback’.

On three out of the past four occasions when the Spanish side have trailed after the first leg in the Champions League, they have fought back to reach the next round – against Wolfsburg in 2015-16 and in 2021-22 against PSG and Manchester City.

So Real’s players were justified in speaking with confidence pre-game but they were second best to Arsenal for the majority of both legs of this tie.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti will now have to turn his focus back to La Liga with Real four points behind Barcelona as they bid to defend their title.

Paris St-Germain continue to cut a swathe through the Premier League’s elite and will now be confident of crossing the next barrier into the final in Munich against either Inter Milan or Barcelona.

Arsenal followed Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa in falling victim to this outstanding side – who showed once more why they are so many people’s favourites to claim their first Champions League crown.

In an environment of raw hostility, PSG simply stepped out and pinned Arsenal back with a magnificent opening salvo that brought Dembele’s goal and could have brought more.

PSG boast the attacking riches of Dembele, Doue and Kvaratskhelia, and they all demonstrated their threat as they made the Gunners suffer early on.

And when Arsenal did break through, Donnarumma showed PSG are as strong at the back as they are at the front.

Weeks do not come much bigger than this. On Saturday, Arsenal host eight-time Women’s Champions League winners Lyon at the Emirates, knowing they are just two matches away from Europe’s showpiece final.

Therefore losing three key players – goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, Chloe Kelly, and their WSL top scorer Alessia Russo – to injury during the international break was not great timing.

Slegers is optimistic Kelly and Russo will be in contention for selection at the weekend, telling Sky Sports “it is looking really good for Chloe and Alessia”, but even without two of their standout forwards, Arsenal always looked fluid in attack against Leicester.

This latest thrashing takes Arsenal to 34 goals scored in the WSL in 2025 – the most of any side – and extends their run of scoring four or more goals at home to seven league matches.

They have also won their past eight games at the Emirates in all competitions by an aggregate score of 31-2.

Lyon, who sit top of the league in France, will be tough opponents on Saturday but form suggests their defenders could be in for a long afternoon.

It took until the 20th minute for Madrid to have their first real chance, when Vinicius Jr curled an effort wide.

But Rice took control of the tie for Arsenal in the second half.

The Gunners were the better side all evening and took the lead in the 58th minute, when Rice curled the first of two excellent free-kicks round the Real Madrid wall into the corner of the net past Thibaut Courtois.

Rice scored his second of the night with a free-kick of equal quality 12 minutes later, bending another long-range effort into the top right-hand corner to leave Madrid stunned.

Mikel Merino then made sure it was a memorable night for Arsenal when he curled a shot into the bottom corner from inside the area just five minutes later.

Things only got worse for Madrid when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in stoppage time for picking up a second yellow card.

The double-kick penalty that cost Atletico Madrid in shootout
Julian Alvarez slipped as he struck the penalty, but the ball flew into the top-left corner.

It looked like it was 2-2 in the Champions League last-16 shootout between derby rivals Atletico and Real Madrid.

What happened next was another one of those fine-margin VAR calls – but for a very unusual reason.

On review, Atletico’s Alvarez was judged to have touched the ball twice.

That is against the rules so it was chalked off – with no option for a retake.

How seven Premier League clubs could qualify for Champions League
The Premier League is on course to gain an extra Champions League place for next season based on the performances of English sides in Europe.

Two leagues across Europe will each be rewarded with an additional spot in the 2025-26 Champions League as a reward for their coefficient ranking.

England leads the coefficient rankings table, putting the Premier League on track to offer a path into the Champions League for the club that finishes fifth in the table.

But there could be up to seven Premier League clubs in next season’s Champions League if the season plays out in a particular fashion.

Record-breaking Arsenal enjoy carnival season in Eindhoven
Eindhoven has been packed with carnival-goers in recent days but on Tuesday it was Arsenal enjoying their own party in the city, getting over their goalscoring crisis and setting a Champions League record in the process.

Mikel Arteta’s side became the first team in Champions League history to score seven goals away from home in the knockout stages of the competition as they romped to a 7-1 win over PSV Eindhoven.

It was the most goals the Gunners have scored in a single game since beating Newcastle 7-3 in the Premier League 13 years ago.

The Arsenal manager said the win had given his players “joy and confidence and belief”, but was not getting carried away when questions were put to him about the records that his team had broken.

“Even if Saka was here Ethan would be still getting minutes because he’s that good and works so hard in training. We have so many top young players.”

Ex-Chelsea & Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra wins court case against FIFA in ruling that challenges player contract rules
WHAT HAPPENED?

Diarra challenged FIFA’s longstanding player contract rules in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) which prevented footballers from signing with new clubs if they terminated their contracts prematurely. These FIFA regulations, part of the organisation’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), have now been deemed unlawful by Europe’s highest court as they potentially violate European Union law, particularly the ones governing freedom of movement and competition within the EU.

Arsenal secured their first win in the new Champions League format as they overcame Paris St-Germain at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side followed an opening draw with Atalanta by taking control with two first-half goals from Kai Havertz’s header and a free-kick from Bukayo Saka that drifted in past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG had their moments, especially when Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves hit the woodwork either side of the break, but the platform for victory was established by a dominant first-half display from Arsenal.

Havertz put them ahead after 20 minutes when he beat Donnarumma to Leandro Trossard’s inviting cross to head home, before the keeper was deceived by Saka’s set-piece from near the touchline as he was unsighted in a packed penalty area.

PSG, stripped of the old superstars such as Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, mounted periods of pressure after the break as Arsenal struggled to retain possession, but Arteta felt confident enough to give a debut to Mikel Merino, a £31m signing from Real Sociedad, on another satisfactory night for Arsenal.

In January 2001 Mikel Arteta left Barcelona for Paris St-Germain in a move that would ultimately help transform one of the most intelligent midfielders of his generation into one of the game’s top coaches.

It was where he first displayed the leadership qualities that have seen him progress to Arsenal manager and he will welcome PSG to Emirates Stadium on Tuesday in the Champions League.

The 18-year-old Arteta, faced with the impossible task of usurping the likes of Pep Guardiola, French World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit, Dutch international Phillip Cocu and Xavi Hernandez in Barcelona’s star-studded midfield, had moved to the French capital on an 18-month loan deal.

PSG were yet to become French football’s dominant force but had progressed to the second group stage of the Champions League and boasted several big names of their own, including Jay-Jay Okocha, Nicolas Anelka and Mauricio Pochettino.

A superb individual strike from two-goal Liam Delap earned Ipswich Town a draw against Aston Villa, who missed a chance to move level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Villa came from a goal behind to beat Wolves 3-1 in their previous Premier League outing, a week after fighting back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Everton at Villa Park.

That pattern looked like continuing on Sunday, once the visitors had recovered from their early setback.

Anthony Gordon’s second-half penalty earned Newcastle a point as Manchester City were held to a draw at St James’ Park.

City defender Josko Gvardiol had put the visitors ahead after 35 minutes when he finished smartly from Jack Grealish’s lay-off.

However, while Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis combined well in covering for the influential Rodri, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, City eventually buckled during Newcastle’s best spell of the game just after the break.

When Bruno Guimaraes played an excellent pass through the City defence, Kyle Walker played Gordon onside and the England forward went down under Ederson’s challenge. Ederson was booked and Gordon kept his cool to send the Brazilian the wrong way from the spot.

Pep Guardiola’s side should have been further ahead at the break but Ilkay Gundogan fluffed his attempted chip after Newcastle keeper Nick Pope had presented a clearance straight to City when he was a long way out of his goal.

Both sides tried to force a winner, with Newcastle substitute Sean Longstaff going close for the hosts and Bernardo Silva testing Nick Pope deep in stoppage time.

The Magpies remain with only one win in 34 top-flight meetings with City, who have have now dropped four points in the space of a week after their 100% start to the campaign.

Vivianne Miedema scored on her return to Emirates Stadium as Manchester City drew with former club Arsenal in their Women’s Super League opener.

A brilliant long-range effort from England international Jess Park looked to have given City the victory before Arsenal substitute Beth Mead volleyed in a late equaliser.

Netherlands international Miedema, who was allowed to leave Arsenal when her contract expired this summer, was fortunate her strike took a heavy deflection off defender Laia Codina and she did not celebrate her goal.

“I’m not really a big celebration person anyway,” Miedema told Sky Sports after the game. “You saw a bit of emotion but that’s normal. Besides that, be respectful to the [Arsenal] fans that supported me for the last seven years as well.

“Me coming back here today was a big thing. I’m really happy with the reception I got from the Arsenal fans,” she added. “The most important thing today was to start the season well with the new team. It’s always nice to get off that zero again and get a goal.”

Arsenal’s set-piece expertise was in evidence again as Gabriel, in a replica of his winner at Tottenham last week, headed home a corner at the far post seconds into first-half stoppage time.

The most contentious incident came seconds before the break when Arsenal’s Trossard was given a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, leaving the visitors nursing a sense of injustice after City’s Jeremy Doku had escaped punishment for a similar offence.

It set the scene for a City siege after the break, but Arsenal defended with courage, resilience and organisation, aided by the heroics of goalkeeper David Raya, only to be denied right at the end – as they were on the brink of inflicting the first home Premier League defeat on the champions since Brentford won at Etihad Stadium in November 2022.

Stones’ dramatic intervention means City stay top of the Premier League.

Ben Sulayem, the head of motorsport’s governing body, said F1 had to “differentiate between our sport – motorsport – and rap music”.

Hamilton said: “Saying ‘rappers’ is very stereotypical. If you think about it, most rappers are black.

Dominant Dubois knocks Joshua out in epic Wembley clash – Sept. 21, 2024
The 27-year-old dropped Joshua multiple times to retain the IBF heavyweight title and leave his domestic rival’s career in ruins.

Londoner Dubois stopped Joshua, 34, with an incredible counter right hook to secure the biggest win of his 24-fight career.

“Are you not entertained?” Dubois shouted post-fight, to huge cheers in the packed-out stadium.

“I’m a gladiator. I am a warrior to the bitter end. I want to get to the top level of this sport and reach my potential.”

Joshua’s bid to become a three-time champion and return to the division’s top table ended in the most dramatic and unexpected fashion.

AJ – who won his first world title more than eight years ago – suffered a fourth loss in his 32nd bout, but hinted he will continue in the sport and has a clause to trigger a rematch with Dubois.

“You know I’m ready to kick off in the ring but I’m going to keep it respectful,” he said.

“Before I came here, I always say to myself I’m a fighter for life. You keep rolling the dice.”

An ecstatic Dubois, meanwhile, enjoyed the crowning moment which had eluded him after he was elevated to world champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt.

David Raya made an unbelievable double save from a penalty as Arsenal drew at Italian side Atalanta in their Champions League opener.

The Spaniard got down low to his right to keep out Mateo Retegui’s spot-kick and somehow got across his goal to scoop the striker’s follow-up header off the line.

That was the one real moment of drama and quality in an otherwise forgettable match in Bergamo.

Chances were at a premium, with Raya not needing to pull off any other saves outside of that two-second spell.

Arsenal, meanwhile, did not have a single shot between the 18th and 75th minute.

Like Europa League winners Atalanta, the Gunners’ only two shots on target came as part of a double save.

Marco Carnesecchi tipped away Bukayo Saka’s free-kick and blocked Thomas Partey’s follow-up.

Arsenal came out on top in a fiery north London derby as Gabriel’s second-half header gave them a crucial victory at Tottenham.

The Gunners were without captain Martin Odegaard and key midfielder Declan Rice through injury and suspension respectively and survived a stern examination from Ange Postecoglou’s side to spark ecstatic scenes at the final whistle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya excelled in the early stages to keep Spurs at bay with fine saves from Dejan Kulusevski while Spurs opposite number Guglielmo Vicario had to be at his best to keep out Kai Havertz’s header.

Tempers boiled over late in the first half as players from both sides clashed following Jurien Timber’s challenge on Pedro Porro, setting the stage for a tense second period.

And it was Gabriel who made the vital contribution after 64 minutes, escaping the attentions of Cristian Romero to rise and power Bukayo Saka’s corner high past Vicario.

Arsenal always relish any derby victory at Spurs but this one will taste especially sweet as it was achieved without two such significant figures in Odegaard and Rice while providing the perfect platform for next weekend’s visit to champions Manchester City.

Erling Haaland scored twice to take his Premier League tally to nine as Manchester City recovered from conceding after just 23 seconds to maintain their 100% record with victory over Brentford.

Visiting forward Yoane Wissa scored the quickest top-flight goal of the season, heading into an empty net from close range after John Stones and Ederson inexplicably messed up attempting to clear Keane Lewis-Potter’s nod-back.

City were rocking but Haaland steadied the ship, driving home the loose ball after Kevin de Bruyne had been tackled inside the Brentford box.

The Norwegian was playing despite the death of a close family friend in midweek. He scored a second before the break as he outmuscled Ethan Pinnock to reach Ederson’s long punt forward.

It left Haaland tantalisingly close to becoming only the fifth player in English top-flight history – and the first since 1946 – to score three successive hat-tricks.

He came close. Brentford keeper Mark Flekken tipped one goal-bound effort over the bar. Haaland then sent an instinctive first-time strike against the post and was unable to get enough power behind the rebound to take it into the net.

But, despite the crowd clearly willing him on, dad Alfie watching from the stands and manager Pep Guardiola opting not to take him off even though his side start their Champions League campaign with a 2023 final rematch against Inter Milan on Wednesday, this time Haaland had to settle for two.

Liverpool maintained their flawless start under new manager Arne Slot as they outclassed woeful Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The visitors were on a different level to United in a win so comprehensive that it will bring renewed scrutiny on Slot’s fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag, who survived a summer review to win a new contract following last season’s FA Cup win.

Liverpool have barely missed a beat since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp, recording three straight Premier League wins now without conceding a goal, and this was the most impressive display so far.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had already had a goal disallowed for offside before Luis Diaz struck twice in quick succession just before the interval to put Liverpool in complete command.

Erling Haaland continued his superb start to the season by hitting back-to-back hat-tricks as defending champions Manchester City beat West Ham United at London Stadium.

The Norway striker struck twice in the first half and added a third late on to take his tally to seven goals in three games and maintain City’s 100% start to the campaign.

Haaland slid in a 10th-minute opener after receiving a pass from Bernardo Silva, but West Ham drew level when Ruben Dias turned Jarrod Bowen’s cross into his own net.

Haaland restored City’s lead midway through the first half, driving a fierce strike into the roof of the net.

The Hammers had struggled to get a foothold in the game but hit the woodwork early in the second half through Mohammed Kudus following a quick break.

That chance sparked them into life and for a significant period they had their opponents on the back foot.

But they did not threaten Ederson enough and Haaland – quiet for much of the second half – beat the offside trap late on to get his and City’s third.

The win means Pep Guardiola’s side are already top of the table in the early stages of this season while West Ham are 14th with three points from three games.

A second-half goal from Joao Pedro saw Brighton come from behind to draw after Arsenal had Declan Rice sent off in an entertaining game in north London.

It looked as though the Gunners were going to continue their perfect start to the season when Bukayo Saka played through Kai Havertz, who lobbed Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal for the 38th-minute opener.

An independent commission’s decision to dock Everton 10 points for breaching Premier League financial rules could have seismic ramifications, and the fallout is being felt well beyond Goodison.

Stunned Everton fans may take some comfort from the sense they at least now know where they stand. But while the severity of the punishment meted out may have dismayed many, there is a very real danger that the situation facing the club could soon become even more serious.

US Open 2023 final: How Coco Gauff fulfilled her potential in New York
Shortly after she won the US Open title, there was a video doing the rounds on social media of Coco Gauff dancing on Arthur Ashe Stadium as an excited eight-year-old.

Eleven years later, the American teenager was standing in the same stadium – this time on the court lifting a Grand Slam trophy like she had long dreamed.

Gauff burst on to the scene as a 15-year-old phenomenon at Wimbledon in 2019, now fulfilling her date with the destiny many had predicted ever since – and with the charisma she showed even then.

After beating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 in Saturday’s New York showpiece, she took the microphone to deliver an accomplished and heartfelt speech that covered every base.

She spilled the secret of her dad Corey crying in celebration – “he thinks he is hard” – and also threw shade on the people who doubted whether she would live up to the “hype”.

“I want to say ‘thank you’ to the people who didn’t believe in me,” she said.

“I tried my best to carry on with with grace but, honestly, to those who thought you were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it.

“I’m burning so bright right now.”

Arsenal 2-2 Fulham: Joao Palhinha earns draw for 10-man Fulham away to Gunners
Joao Palhinha secured a point for 10-man Fulham in an entertaining Premier League draw at Arsenal.

Palhinha’s first-time finish from a corner in the 87th minute earned the away side a share of the spoils.

The Cottagers had Calvin Bassey sent off four minutes earlier after he fouled Eddie Nketiah on the counter-attack.

Andreas Pereira got Fulham off to a flying start, scoring after just 57 seconds.

Pereira latched onto a loose ball from Bukayo Saka and fired in a curling shot, with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale out of position.

England’s wait to win a first Women’s World Cup title goes on after Spain deservedly triumphed in the final in Sydney.

The Lionesses, looking to become the first England senior side since the men’s team in 1966 to win the World Cup, suffered heartbreak after being outplayed by a Spanish side full of flair and creativity.

England’s players fell to their knees in tears at the final whistle as Spain celebrated inside their penalty area after dealing with a final corner kick in the 14th minute of nerve-wracking stoppage time.

Spain captain Olga Carmona slotted the winner past goalkeeper Mary Earps in the first half, capitalising after England’s Lucy Bronze lost possession in midfield.

England manager Sarina Wiegman, who has now lost two successive World Cup finals, introduced Lauren James and Chloe Kelly at half-time but Spain maintained control despite the Lionesses’ best efforts.

Craig Breen: Irish World Rally Championship driver dies in testing accident before Croatia Rally
Irish World Rally Championship driver Craig Breen has died in an accident at a pre-event test before this weekend’s Croatia Rally.

The 33-year-old’s Hyundai Motorsport team confirmed that the Waterford man had been involved in the incident at about 11:00 BST on Thursday.

Breen’s co-driver James Fulton was unharmed in the accident.

“Hyundai Motorsport sends its sincerest condolences to Craig’s family, friends and his many fans,” the team said.

Breen had rejoined Hyundai on a part-time basis for the new WRC season having spent a year with the M-Sport Ford World Rally team.

The Waterford man finished second to Ott Tanak at Rally Sweden in February in his first WRC start of the season, in what was his sixth runner-up position in the series.

Breen was alternating in Hyundai’s third car with Spaniard Dani Sordo this year and was scheduled to make his second appearance of the WRC season in Croatia.

8-Match Ban + £75,000 For Push On Ref
Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic has been banned for eight games by an independent commission after pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in their FA Cup loss at Manchester United.

The Serbia striker received a three-match ban for the sending-off, three for violent conduct and an additional two for “improper, abusive, insulting and threatening” language.

He has also been fined £75,000.

Fulham manager Marco Silva will serve a two-match ban after he was sent off.
